Roland Robertson to Speak at 2012 Conference

The 2012 Global Studies Conference is happy to announce distinguished scholar Roland Robertson as one of our plenaries for the Moscow Conference.

Roland Robertson is Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus of Sociology at the University of Pittsburgh, USA; Visiting Professor of Sociology at the University of Essex; and Distinguished Guest Professor of Cultural Studies at Tsinghua University, Beijing, China. He was until very recently Professor of Sociology and Global Society at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland. Professor Robertson was the recipient of the first Distinguished Career Award from the section on Global and Transnational Sociology of the American Sociological Association, 2010. He began his academic career at the University of Leeds, and subsequently held appointments at the University of Essex, the University of Pittsburgh and the University of York (where he was Head of the Department of Sociology from 1970 to 1974). He returned to Pittsburgh in 1974 and remained there until his move to Aberdeen in 1999. He holds, or has held, visiting positions in sociology, pedagogy and religious studies at universities in various countries, including the USA, England, Brazil, Italy, Austria, Sweden, China (Hong Kong) and Turkey.

Robertson has published extensively in the sociology of globalization, culture, religion and sport. Among his most influential publications are The Sociological Interpretation of Religion (1970), Meaning and Change (1978) Globalization: Social Theory and Global Culture (1992) and a large number of other books and articles. He has also edited or co-edited various volumes, including the Encyclopedia of Globalization (2007) and Globalization: Critical Concepts in Sociology (2003).

His work has been translated from English into about twenty languages, including Spanish, Portuguese, German, Japanese, Chinese, Persian, Arabic, Bulgarian, Ukrainian, Croat, Turkish, Italian, French, Polish, Russian, Danish, Korean, Greek, Swedish, and Hungarian.

Call for Papers

If you intend to present a paper at the conference, your participation begins with submission of a paper proposal. For information on proposals, presentation types, and other options, please click here. Once you are ready to submit your proposal, you can do so by going here. If your proposal is accepted, you will then need to register for the conference.

Registration

Those who submit paper proposals should register following the acceptance of the proposal.  We also highly encourage delegates who do not intend to present to attend the conference and may register at any time. Announcing Plenary Speaker Marcelo Côrtes Neri for the 2011 Global Studies Conference

We are pleased to announce that Marcelo Côrtes Neri will be joining us for the 2011 Global Studies Conference in Rio from 18-20 July.

Marcelo Côrtes Neri is the chief-economist of the Center for Social Policies (CPS) at Getulio Vargas Foundation. He also teaches at the undergraduate and graduate programmes at the EPGE/FGV. He holds a PhD in Economics, Princeton University and a Master’s Degree in Economics, PUC-Rio. He has worked as a researcher at the Social Studies department in IPEA (Brazilian government’s institute for applied economic research). His main areas of interest are well being, poverty, education and microeconometrics. Some of his studies include: End of Hunger Map, and The New Middle Class in Brazil. He also edited the following books (in Portuguese):Microcredit, the Northeastern Mystery and the Brazilian Grameen, , Social Security Coverage: Diagnosis and Proposals, Social Essays, Portraits of Disability in Brazil, Inflation and Consumption. He was invited by President Lula to become a member of the Council of Economic and Social Development and he is currently at the steering comitee of CDES, elected by other members. He works actively in the proposal, evaluation and debate of public policies; having participated in the creation of a system of state minimum wages, the design of Familia Carioca a conditional cash transfers program launched in the city of Rio. His proposal of a mechanism for social credit linked to the Millennium Development Goals received an award at the Global Network Meeting, in Dakar, Senegal. Mr. Neri was ranked one of the 100 most influential Brazilians in 2010 by Época and one of the 50 most influential Cariocas in 2003 by Veja, the two magazines with highest circulation in Brazil. He writes regularly Conjuntura Econômica, Valor Econômico and Folha de São Paulo

Announcing Plenary Speaker João Paulo Rodrigues Chaves for the 2011 Global Studies Conference

We are pleased to announce that João Paulo Rodrigues Chaves will be joining us for the 2011 Global Studies Conference in Rio from 18-20 July.

João Paulo Rodriguez Chaves, 30 years old, is member of National Coordination of Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra (MST) and, at present, coordinates the MST national secretariat in São Paulo. He does the articulation between the MST and others social movements of national level. He is settled in the region of Pontal do Paranapanema, in São Paulo state, having lived there with his family since 1985.

Announcing Plenary Speaker Sonia Fleury for the 2011 Global Studies Conference

We are pleased to announce that Professor Sonia Fleury will be joining us for the 2011 Global Studies Conference in Rio from 18-20 July.

Professor Fleury works at the Brazilian School of Public Administration and Business, Getulio Vargas Foundation, since 1983, as a senior researcher in charge of the Study Program on Innovation in the Public Sphere, having developed studies related to Democracy, Citizenship and Social Exclusion; Social policies, decentralization and participation; State reform and governance; Brazilian Political System; Public Policy and Theories on Democracy.

Professor Fleury has a Doctorate degree in Political Science, a master degree in Sociology and a Bachelor degree in Psychology, and has published over 120 articles in scientific magazines in different countries, and wrote or participated as author in more than 20 books in Brazil, several countries in Latin America, Europe, Canada and USA.

She has also given classes in different Universities in Argentina, Spain, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Venezuela, Dominican Republic, Honduras and Paraguay. In USA she has been a Faculty Fellow at the Kellogg Institute in Notre Dame University and a Senior Social Development Specialist Lecturer at the INDES, Inter-American Development Bank.

Announcing Dr. Gustavo Lins Ribeiro as a 2011 Plenary Speaker

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Gustavo Lins Ribeiro will join us in Rio de Janeiro as a plenary speaker for the 2011 Global Studies Conference.

Gustavo Lins Ribeiro holds his Ph. D. in Anthropology (City University of New York, 1988). He is currently a full Professor of Anthropology in the University of Brasilia; Level 1A Research Fellow of Brazil’s National Council of Scientific and Technological Develoment (CNPq). He was a visiting professor in several universities and research centers in Argentina, Colombia, Mexico and the U.S. He has done research and written on topics such as development, environmentalism, international migration, cyberculture, globalization and transnationalism. His doctoral dissertation on the construction of the Yacyreta Dam won the National Association of Graduate Programs in the Social Sciences 1989 Prize for the Best Doctoral Dissertation and was published in Argentina, Brazil and the United States. He has written and edited 14 volumes in Portuguese, Spanish and English, and more than 100 chapters and articles in different journals and books in Latin America, Europe, Asia and the U.S., in Portuguese, Spanish, English, Japanese, French and German. He was a member of the Advisory Council of the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research (New York); Advisory Editor of Current Anthropology (Chicago); president of the Brazilian Association of Anthropology; a founder and the first chair of the World Council of Anthropological Associations. He is a co-chair of the Committee on World Anthropologies of the AAA and serves on more than 20 editorial boards of journals in Europe, the U.S. and Latin America, including the American Anthropologist, American Ethnologist, Anthropology Today, Journal des Anthropologues and Alteridades. His last books are the edited volume (with Arturo Escobar) “World Anthropologies. Disciplinary Transformations in Systems of Power” (Oxford/New York: Berg Publishers, 2006) and “The Capital of Hope”, in Portuguese, about the construction of Brasilia from the workers’ point-of-view (Brasilia: Edunb, 2008).

Elisa P. Reis to Join Fourth Annual Global Studies Conference

Please welcome Professor Elisa P. Reis to our plenary speaker line-up for the Fourth Annual Global Studies Conference.

Elisa Reis is a professor of Political Sociology at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. She holds her PhD in Political Science (MIT, US 1980); MA (1972) and BA (1967), Brazil; Post-graduate diploma in development sociology, ILADES, Chile (1968). Professor Reis is a fellow of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC) and of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS) as well as a visiting professor at University of California at San Diego, Columbia University, MIT and Ludwig Maximilians Universitat. Munich.

Author of more than 100 articles in Brazilian and international periodicals, some of her latest work includes “New Ways of Relating Authority and Solidarity: Theoretical and Empirical Explorations”, in The ISA Handbook in Contemporary Sociology, Kalekin and Denis (eds.), Sage, 2009. Among her books, Elite Perceptions of Poverty and Inequality (ed. with M.Moore) Zed, 2005 has been very influential in poverty studies.

Some of Professor Reis’ selected administrative experiences include Secretary of the Brazilian Sociological Society (SBS), President of the National Association for the Social Sciences (ANPOCS), Vice-president of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (current), Chair of the Interdisciplinary Research Network for Studies on Social Inequality (NIED) (current), and Vice-president for Latin America of the Comparative Research on Poverty (CROP).

Announcing Myrian Santos as Plenary Speaker

Please welcome Professor Myrian Santos who will be joining the 2011 Global Studies Conference in Rio de Janeiro, 18-20 July.

Myrian Sepúlveda dos Santos is Associate Professor of Sociology at the State University of Rio de Janeiro. She gained her Ph.D. in Sociology from the New School for Social Research, New York, in 1994. Her research interests relate to collective memory, sociological and cultural theory. She is currently developing research on collective memory and trauma in prisons. Her publications include several books and articles on social theory, museum exhibits, popular culture, carnival festivities, slavery, race relations and, more recently, violence.
